We have officially broken ground on the brand-new, state-of-the-art Spirit Lake Health Center in St. Michael, North Dakota.
The new clinic is being thoughtfully designed to reflect the values, history, and traditions of the Spirit Lake Nation while creating a welcoming space for health and healing.
Inside the facility, visitors will find a flexible community hall and demonstration kitchen that will support nutrition education, healthy cooking programs, and community wellness activities. Dakota culture will be woven throughout the building, with the Seven Teachings incorporated into the interior design and unique wayfinding elements helping patients easily navigate the space.
The exterior design draws inspiration from the traditional teepee and includes Dakota-inspired ribbon and floral patterns, along with buffalo track motifs that honor the land’s history. Located on a site that was once used as a buffalo pasture, the campus will also feature a healing garden, buffalo mounds, walking trails for staff, and a convenient drive-through pharmacy.
The facility will utilize geothermal heating and cooling, solar energy, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient windows. With the exception of its emergency backup generator, the building will operate without fossil fuels, supporting a healthier and more sustainable future for the community.
